I think I first saw Reina Takahashi’s work on a wall near the bathroom at a friend’s place in Oakland. Since I personally love Thomas Demand’s paper-based works, I was immediately drawn to her cake sculptures when I saw them. They possess a unique quality—abstract yet still maintaining a tangible, physical presence that illustrations cannot replicate. It made me realize that the constraints of physics and gravity, rather than being limitations, actually serve as elements that preserve a sense of humanity in these models. While we may eventually turn even these realizations into data for computation, I also believe that people keep working with their hands precisely to develop the ability to recognize such things.
- At first, I couldn’t recall the artist’s name, so I asked ChatGPT and was introduced to a different artist. In the end, I was able to track down the creator by performing an image search using Google Photos, which led me to her Instagram.
- One of her works features letters crafted out of paper. Seeing how much style and expressive depth could be conveyed through just the letter “P” made me realize the vast potential within such a simple form.
- How could the creative language, thought patterns, and artistic techniques behind these works be articulated in words? To explore this idea, I tried making a skateboard out of paper.

A monochrome paper sculpture of a skateboard, designed with folded and layered paper to create a geometric yet playful aesthetic. The skateboard deck, trucks, and wheels are crafted entirely from paper, with each component featuring varying shades of black, white, and gray to create a harmonious grayscale tone. The board is positioned dynamically, as if ready for action, and set against a soft, gradient background in shades of gray. The skateboard occupies approximately one-fifth of the overall image space, ensuring a balanced and minimalistic composition. The lighting creates soft shadows, emphasizing the three-dimensional quality of the paper construction. The scene is minimalistic, with a clean and modern art style, evoking a sense of abstraction and physical modeling.
