# The Over50 Party Reminds Us Who We Walk With #### Overview A reunion party past fifty, where a zine, a sound and familiar faces overwrote memory with the sense of having been together. ![[over50-party-print.webp|Orange and black halftone marks printed across cream paper]] *Over50 (Tokyo, 2026). An impression of the night.* --- *November 1, 2026. Over50, a party at Liquid Room in Tokyo, some thirty years after the parties of our student days.* Now and then, parties were held in the lounge at school. An older student's VJ set, making noise together outdoors at full volume, going to clubs in the city: all of it was a first for me. Back then we were desperate to make the literary magazine of our own generation, and making magazines, shaping culture through criticism, felt like the hottest culture there was. --- On November 1, a party called Over50 was held at Liquid Room. It came some thirty years later, and it felt as if the party goes on even past fifty. The faces gathered there were familiar ones. I was surprised that the sound I had heard on the dance floor as a student was there again, together with the people of that time. At the venue, a zine was handed out, made by members of MONSOON now past fifty. A column written in it tangled with the sound and faintly overwrote my memories. Reading the zine, I could see who had valued it, how they had reached out, and what other work it had led to. Names I know now connected once more, as if they had become the future. It felt like undeveloped film. Back then, I understood nothing about mixers or effects. Now, more than before, the way the sound is lifted to match everyone's air and breathing felt completely natural, and the space and the rhythm became one. *Ah, we were together.* That feeling stayed with me strongly. --- MONSOON, PaperKnife and AfterHours Zine existed as ways of making a place of our own. That spirit, and those places, are still here. PaperKnife is recorded in a book that surveys zine trends, alongside Collider and MASSAGE MAGAZINE. Only now did it hit me: the party was what mattered. Sharing time together and responding to one another, something is born, or carved away, or engraved, or drawn. It is an ordinary thing to say, but it was a night that brought back, and made me feel strongly, that something comes into being with the people you are with. In front of those a few years ahead of me, I am always left feeling that nothing has started yet.
