# Method ## A system is alive when it can change and remain functional. A field note preserves a signal: something felt, noticed, or unresolved. Evidence appears when observations begin to form a pattern. Learning gives that pattern a provisional model. An essay turns the model into a claim that can be examined, challenged, and revised. Production gives the claim a perceptible form. Operation places that form in use. What happens there is not the end of the process: its effects return as new observations. > **Operational criterion** > Is the work producing a desirable change while remaining functional? ## Reading this site Every note carries the stage it has reached. Nothing is withheld for being unfinished. The stage is simply an honest account of where the thinking currently stands. The six stages above compress into four labels used across the site. **Signal** — an observation kept intact before it becomes an argument. Something felt, noticed, or unresolved. *Stage 01. Mostly Field Notes.* **Forming** — observations have begun to cohere. Evidence is accumulating and a provisional model is taking shape, but the text does not yet end with a claim. *Stages 02–03. Field notes that are becoming something, and essays not yet finished.* **Claim** — the text ends with a position that can be examined, challenged, and revised. *Stage 04. Essays.* **In Operation** — the work has taken a perceptible form and entered use. Its effects are returning as new observations. *Stages 05–06. Work and teaching.* A note may hold one stage for years. What this practice produces is movement between stages, not arrival at the last one. ## One continuous practice, flowing through three forms. ### Field Notes Observations, fragments, tests, references, and unresolved questions. These are not incomplete essays; they preserve contact with situations before a conclusion closes them.
